Trusted Saskatoon Jewellers at Batemans Discuss Recycling Gold Jewellery

Bateman Jewellers are Trusted Saskatoon jewellery experts! Did you know that they are the oldest independent jewellery store in Saskatoon?  Bateman Jewellers maintain that the relationship with their clients is very important to them. In their latest Saskatoon jewellery tip, they discuss recycling gold jewellery.

IS RECYCLED GOLD THE FUTURE OF JEWELLERY?

Gold Recycling

It is estimated that for every 1 million cell phones that are recycled, over 34 kg of gold can be recovered!

Alternatives to mining, such as recycled gold from e-waste, exist today and we are now able to craft beautiful jewellery while limiting our negative impact on the environment.

The future is here!

What does recycled gold mean?

Gold is a highly valued and much loved precious metal that is perfect for recycling. Indeed, gold does not decline in quality when recycled.

Gold can be found and recycled in many surprising places and due to this being largely unknown, much of it, unfortunately, goes to landfill.

Currently, around 90% of recycled gold comes from jewellery and the remaining 10% comes from other sources

What is the impact of gold mining?

“There is no such thing as clean gold, unless it’s recycled or vintage.” - Alan Septoff, Communications Manager for the No Dirty Gold Campaign

1. Human Rights

A recently published article from Human Rights Watch highlights some of the key human rights abuses that can take place in the gold mining industry. For instance, in Venezuela, a high number of reserves of precious metals, including gold, is controlled by armed rebels. Those syndicates “exert strict control over the populations who live and work there, impose abusive working conditions, and viciously treat those accused of theft and other offences.”

2. Waste

One single gold ring can potentially create a staggering 20 tons of mining waste! This waste contains toxic chemicals which can contaminate the nearby water supply and soil. In some cases, local residents are exposed to chemicals such as mercury, which creates serious long-term illnesses. Mercury is a cheap product used to reveal the gold from the rock. Unfortunately, it causes devastating long-term impacts on the people and the planet.

3. Use of Water

Large-scale projects can use an average of 60,000 - 100,000 cubic meters of water every day. It would provide the basic water needs for a population equal to that of a large U.S. city for a year!

4. Acid Mine Drainage

One major issue with Underground Mining is called Fool’s Gold, or Iron Sulphides. It occurs when the rock reacts with oxygen to make what is then called Sulfuric AcidThis acidic process drains from the mine site and can be up to 300 times more concentrated than acid rain! Once this process begins, it is very complicated to stop the spread of contamination in the water.

5. Air Pollution

The electricity produced by burning coal and other fossil fuels in the mining process generates air pollution, smog, and greenhouse gases. As gold mines are typically large-scale operations requiring a sufficient amount of heavy machinery and earth-moving vehicles, airborne pollution is a significant environmental issue.

6. Wildlife

Gold mining destroys local wildlife, habitats and important ecosystems, mostly because of the pollution produced and the vast amount of land each mine required. For instance, the largest mine in the world, the Grasberg Mine, located in Indonesia, operates on 27,400 acres of land and has been a source of ongoing friction and conflict due to its negative environmental impact on the surrounding ecosystems.

What is an appraisal?

An appraisal is a professional opinion of the authenticity, quality, design and approximate value of a piece of property. An appraisal must be typewritten in concise, objective and internationally recognised terminology, accompanied with a photo.

Why Appraise Jewellery?

Most people require appraisals for obtaining insurance but other reasons may include - a division of property upon death or divorce, as proof of ownership when travelling, to use as collateral or for resale.

Where to Find an Appraiser

There is no licensing body which requires jewellery appraisers to attain a minimum level of education/experience before practising. Until legislation is passed to protect the public from those who are unqualified, the burden is on consumers to investigate a company's reputation and question its appraiser's competency. Our Appraiser(s) have a minimum of 25 years of experience and are G.I.A. certified.

How Much Will it Cost?

Fees vary among qualified appraisers. Professional-level fees usually indicate a high degree of education and experience as well as state-of-the-art lab facilities. Since no one professional can be an expert on everything, occasionally your appraiser may consult with others who specialize in a particular field. Be prepared to allow extra time and cost. See our Price list to give you a guide to our pricing. It is always best for us to see the piece first to give you an accurate price quote.

When You're Ready

When you bring your valuables to Bateman Jewellers, we do the appraisals locally. We insure the item(s) for the duration of their stay with us, providing your peace of mind. Although the normal turnaround time is about 1 week, same-day services may be arranged by appointment with notice.

  • Minimum Charge $80

Trusted Saskatoon Employment Expert, Hanif of Express Employment Tip on hiring the Semi-Retired

Express Employment Professionals is Saskatoon’s only locally owned and operated staffing and recruitment agency. It offers a full scope of staffing and recruitment solutions, from professional search and headhunting to temporary staffing. In Hanif's latest Saskatoon employment agency tip, he shared interesting data on employers not offering employees a semi-retirement option despite ongoing labour shortages.

Express Employment Saskatoon Is Your Trusted Saskatoon Recruitment and Employment Agency

Most Companies Not Offering Semi-Retirement Despite Ongoing Labour Shortages

According to a survey from The Harris Poll commissioned by Express Employment Professionals, Canadian companies dealing with ongoing labour shortages overlook a significant source of labour – retired workers.

Only one quarter (25%) of Canadian companies offer semi-retirement, despite the growing number of employees retiring. Indeed, nearly one in four companies (23%) say retirements are one of the main reasons they expect increased employee turnover in 2023.

Of companies that offer semi-retirement, about one-third (33%) report an increase in the number of employees choosing semi-retirement over the past two years.

While keeping or bringing back retired workers might be seen as a temporary solution to labour shortages given age-related issues, more than half of the employees (53%) that have retired in the past two years have been under the age of 65, with more than a quarter (27%) retiring under the age of 60.

According to Niven Lee, an Express franchise owner in Delta, British Columbia, semi-retirement is a win-win situation for both the company and the retired employee.

“Offering semi-retirement can reduce the shortage of workers, but the main benefit to employers is the continued transfer of institutional knowledge and company culture,” said Lee. “For retired workers, it gives them a sense of purpose, allows them to keep up to date in their field, and gives them flexibility to enjoy their older years.”

KV Aulakh, an Express franchise owner in Barrie, Ontario, agrees that offering semi-retirement has significant benefits.

“One of the biggest drawbacks of retirement is the lack of routine that people feel initially, but semi-retirement allows older employees to slowly adjust to retirement by offering a routine with less hours, less stress, and more time away from work,” said Aulakh. “Semi-retirement also allows companies to hire someone who is more likely to show up to work. The benefits to bringing a retired employee back on a flexible basis are huge as that worker already has the required skills and familiarity with the processes, so they can continue to train the new workforce using the years of experience they have.”

Lee says that the number of employees retiring has increased in the past few years.

“Due to the aging and retiring of baby boomers, we have seen an increase in the proportion of employees retiring,” said Lee. “In addition, during the pandemic, we saw a growing number of older employees taking early retirement.”

However, both Lee and Aulakh say that inflationary pressures have caused many older workers to delay or come out of retirement. As a result, there is a growing source of labour that can help companies struggling to find qualified workers.

“The increased cost of living is making it difficult for people to live only on their pensions and, as a result, we definitely see an older age group continue to stay in workforce in our local market,” said Aulakh.
“As baby boomers continue to age and consider retirement, the labour shortage is only going to get worse,” said Bill Stoller, Express Employment International CEO. “Semi-retirement is one solution to allow experienced workers time to train their successors, ensuring a seamless knowledge transfer and business continuity.”

 Light Industrial Sector Jobs Explained

You may have heard the term “light industrial” before, but have you ever wondered what jobs fall into this category?

This is a very broad category of jobs in various industries, but generally, they include positions like assemblers, inventory clerks, warehouse workers, cashiers, and material handlers. You may see a slightly different definition on other platforms that use the terms “working class” and “blue collar” interchangeably.

Knowing which jobs fall into this category will help you better understand the type of work you should pursue and what it will take to land your desired job.

Light industrial jobs are the backbone of our economy and play an essential role in the success of both large and small businesses. Because they typically require less experience and education requirements, they can be easier to enter and start a career.

Express often hires:

  • Shipping/Receiving Clerks
  • Warehouse Workers
  • Assembly Crews
  • Material Handlers
  • Industrial Machine Builders
  • Pick and Pack Workers
  • Custodial/Sanitation Crews
  • Forklift Operators

If you need help finding a light industrial position, Express can help.

Trusted Saskatoon Employment Agency Express Employment Share Oscar Wilde's Thoughts on Development

Express Employment Professionals is Saskatoon’s only locally owned and operated staffing and recruitment agency, that offers a full scope of staffing and recruitment solutions from professional search and headhunting to temporary staffing in Saskatoon. Express Employment Saskatoon Is Your Trusted Saskatoon Recruitment and Employment Agency allows clients to focus their efforts and time on being productive and doing what they do best – their business! Let their team focus on finding that right hire – that is what they do best! In their latest Saskatoon employment agency tip, they share Oscar Wilde's thoughts on development.

Oscar Wilde on Development

As one of the most influential satirists, poets, playwrights, and novelists of the 19th century, Oscar Wilde had a busy career, though his life only lasted 46 years. Born in Dublin, Ireland, and educated at Trinity College and Magdalen College at Oxford, Wilde’s most famous works include the Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Earnest, as well as many other noteworthy epigraphs and essays. His wit and disregard for normalcy made him an avant-garde literary figure, pushing the envelope through writing, editing, and criticism. Though his career ended with his death in 1900, his thorough portfolio showed the importance of hard work, believing in yourself, and a life-long commitment to personal development.

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

One of the most important lessons a leader can learn is to focus on being oneself. Though it is good to learn from others and adopt ideas from successful people, in the end, it is imperative to strive to be your best self, not a mirror image of others. As Wilde put it simply, “everyone else is already taken.”

“It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it.”

Focusing on professional development isn’t a resolution, but a life-long commitment. The saying “you are what you read” could be the best motivation for a leader. And while you may be able to learn from what is necessary for your job, book club, or professional organization, personal development occurs when you study outside of your personal requirements.

“Experience is merely the name men gave to their mistakes.” The Picture of Dorian Gray

Leaders are often noted by the success they and their teams enjoy through the course of a career. However, it is the failures experienced along the way that create lasting leaders. Experience is key to being able to lead an organization while helping your employees learn from your failures.

“Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.”

While education is incredibly important to learn and develop the skills needed to perform a role well, experience is the glue that makes education stick. As Wilde put it, the most important things in life can’t necessarily be taught but lived out.

“I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train.” The Importance of Being Earnest

Finally, one of the most important lessons you can learn about development is to not take yourself too seriously but to learn from your past mistakes. Journaling and documenting your professional development are great ways to look back at where you’ve come from and better know what’s needed to get you where you want to be. Just remember to laugh along the way!

Who are some of your favourite leaders and writers? What have you learned by studying their work?
