Cures for Workplace Stress

Feeling stressed at work now seems to be the norm. Just think about how others respond when you ask how work is going. Consider what you say when you’re asked the same question. How often is the answer “Great! It’s always so relaxed and stress-free?”

Forbes reported on a survey of employees that showed 35 percent had contemplated leaving a job because of workplace stress. In comparison, another 42 percent had actually left a job because of the stress. Work-life balance and the impact of how to manage the two areas of life are obviously a major struggle for many in the workforce today. But what can employers do to help their employees successfully handle the demands of each world?

Diagnosis Before Treatment

So what’s the cause? Before you can find a cure, you have to find the underlying issue. And in this case, there isn’t one problem, but many. According to the Forbes article, some of the top causes include relationships with supervisors, workload, work-life balance, and coworkers. According to an article from The Atlantic, work hours, shift work, downsizing, family conflicts, and money problems also play a role.

That’s a lot of factors. Employers can deal with some, the employees themselves can address some, and some have to be chalked up to the way things are. But, it would be especially beneficial for companies to dig into what’s stressing their employees out and determine what’s within the businesses’ power to change.

Across the country, companies are struggling to meet their workers’ healthcare needs while implementing programs to boost workplace health and productivity. Yet, as Forbes points out,

“Those programs can only work if companies aren’t simultaneously undermining them with stress-inducing management practices. It’s in the employer’s best interest to look into this connection, both for the good of their employees and for their organizations.”

A Multi-Faceted Cure

Certainly, the previously mentioned health insurance and health-focused workplace programs are helpful, but as Forbes continues to emphasize,

“employers can help address these problems by looking beyond health care programs to changes in their management and operations structures.”

That can feel like a heavy burden on businesses' shoulders

However, that could play out in many simple ways in the average business. Company events can build comradery and a family atmosphere. A mentorship program often breeds growth and development. Making employee retention a priority produces a sense of loyalty and security. Stress levels can also be reduced by ensuring leadership clearly expresses realistic performance expectations, provides effective feedback, and consistently praises efforts.

A Balanced Approach

No one could logically dismiss the adverse effects that stress in the workplace has on businesses and employees every day. But it’s also not an easy problem to solve. Workplace stress researchers and university professors Joel Goh, Jeffrey Pfeffer, and Stefano A. Zenios are fully aware of this and discussed it in their recent paper on the same subject. “We do not claim that an ideal stress-free workplace is realistically or economically achievable.”

However, each business leader can make progress by finding the stress triggers within their own companies and determining ways to alleviate as much of the problem as possible. The three authors’ research confirms that while “these stressors cannot be completely eradicated in practice”, the simple act of identifying and addressing stress points “could potentially go a long way.” That’s a very modest cure for such a widespread affliction.

The Trusted Saskatoon team brag about Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation

Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation is a settlement firm focusing on family law and offering a supportive environment for families in transition or conflict. Using a holistic approach, the team at Panko Collaborative Law and Mediation walks with their clients through whatever legal issue they are involved in, empowering them to problem solve out of court. Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation is a Trusted Saskatoon Law Firm Specializing in Family Law!

A Fresh Perspective On Dispute Resolution from The Trusted Team at Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation

It is safe to say that not many lawyers specialize in alternative dispute resolution and mediation when it comes to resolving client disputes. What the team at Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation offers is certainly different,  and we are eager to share what they do, why they get the thumbs up from Trusted Saskatoon and what makes them stand apart from the crowd!

The first thing to note is that the goal at Panko is NOT to go to court!

This is a rather surprising goal for a law firm, so to understand why it helps to learn how the company came to be in the first place. We sat down with Dominique Panko, a mediator at the company, to find out more about the history, the people and the philosophy of the firm.

Dominique's mother, Charmaine Panko is the founder and principal lawyer at the firm. To say Charmaine is a trailblazer is an understatement. She was invited to study law at the University Of Saskatchewan and eagerly commenced her studies in 2000. Charmaine was a mature student and she had already started her family. Understandably she found the workload combined with mothering nine children intense, so she petitioned the University to allow her ( and other mothers) to study part-time. They agreed, and in 2005 Charmaine graduated with a Batchelor of Law (with distinction). After law school, she joined Miller Thomson, where she was a collaborative lawyer, mediator, arbitrator, and trainer, before leaving to start her own company, Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation in 2015.

When Dominique was sharing her mother's story,  it became clear that Charmaine has a talent for problem-solving,  and that she actively seeks out unique ways to overcome objections and tackle roadblocks encountered. Now a mother of 11, Charmaine is an entrepreneur overseeing a successful family-owned and operated Saskatoon law and meditation firm, where Dominique and 3 of her other children also work.

A Commitment To Doing Things Differently

"We will not go to court- there are ways to go your own way that aren't so hard and ways that don't have to be a road to misery. Our goal is to get former adversaries to work together" - Dominique Panko
When asked what being trusted means to the team at Panko, Dominique replied that confidentiality was paramount, clients have to be able to trust them and they must trust the process - to do that they need to feel safe.
The process is very different from what people are used to when struggling with disputes in the emotional areas they deal with. They specialize in mediating family law, divorce and separation, wills and estate disputes. They offer holistic support and their team is invested in finding a way to an amicable resolution for their clients. Hear what their peers have to say...

" As a fellow attorney, I'm scrupulous about who I send my friends and family to. Charmaine is a seasoned attorney who works to achieve the very best results without destroying families. Charmaine's training in mediation and collaborative divorce help her to guide families through the transitions of separation and divorce without the high cost (and emotional toll) of litigation." Carrie Luelling

Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation has several pathways to achieve a successful outcome, including:

Collaborative Law
In this process, each person involved has their own specially trained lawyer. Both lawyers commit to resolving all matters between the people involved without fighting in court. Sometimes in this process, the lawyers might suggest the inclusion of other collaborative team members such as separation coaches, child consultants, or divorce financial experts. The video below explains the process in detail.

" Collaborative Law was able to work around my busy schedule while guiding me on the proper sequence of everything involved in a separation. There were quick responses to any and all of my questions. When it came time to have a face-to-face meeting, I found it to be a comfortable experience. Which was nice, as I was nervous about mediation, to begin with. I found everyone in the office to be very professional." A Harrison

Mediation
A process using a neutral third party to facilitate negotiations and conversation for people in disagreement to reach a mutually satisfactory solution.

Kitchen Table
Working through the agreements that need to be made in an informal way, perhaps through conversations at your kitchen table.

Do It Yourself Separation / Divorce
They can teach you the steps to ensure your separation story is a successful one by taking the CommonSense Separation Course

" We refresh our mission statement every year to ensure it remains relevant. Our role is to empower people through difficult transitions - we go where ever there is conflict and we approach challenges with a fresh perspective. We give our clients tools that they can use for the rest of their lives" - Dominique Panko, Mediator

The team at Trusted Saskatoon is extremely proud to promote and support the wonderful team at Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation. It is clear that they are passionate about helping people find a better way. The situations they are involved with are amongst the most painful, emotional and challenging times in their clients' lives. Charmaine, Dominique and the Panko team authentically care, they are actively involved in offering new ways and they are passionate about petitioning for much-needed change in family law and the justice system so it works better for all involved, but especially for the children!

Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers at Perfection Plumbing Tip Explaining How To Unclog A Toilet

Perfection Plumbing & Drain Cleaning Ltd. is a premier provider of quality drain cleaning and plumbing services in Saskatoon, SK. They are the company of choice to handle all of your plumbing concerns including drain cleaning service, water heater installation, plumbing repair, and more.  Perfection Plumbing is a Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers on the Saskatoon Directory. In their latest tip, they explain how to unclog a toilet without a plunger!

Perfection Plumbing's Experts Explain How To Unclog Your Toilet

It’s one of the worst feelings in the world after you flush the toilet, the water doesn’t go down, but it actually starts coming back up and now you need to deal with how to unplug your toilet. Congratulations, you have clogged the toilet and your reward is going to be the awkward struggle of figuring out how to make things work again as quickly as possible.

So let us tell you how to do it with no fuss, no muss, and no plunger.

You’re going to need three things for this job:

1. Hot water

2. Dish soap/liquid

3. A little bit of time.

You also may want some towels to put around the base of the toilet before attempting this job, or maybe just at least have some towels ready.

The first step is to squeeze about a cup of dish liquid directly into the bowl. You’ll see it’ll eventually sink to the bottom of the bowl, where it’ll start to lubricate, whatever is causing the clog and the pipes around the clog.

Next, add in as much hot water as you can, without overfilling the toilet, and allow that to help the dish liquid to do its job even better. Remember good things come to those who wait so we’re going to spend the next 15 to 20 minutes doing something else. While this magic potion does its thing (it’s been about 20 minutes), you’ll notice the water level has probably sunk quite a bit, this is a good thing, but resist the urge to flush.

Fill your bucket up with hot water and dump it down the toilet again. The reason you want to do this is to help restart that water cycle and to further push that clog right down the pipe. Then you can flush and then you can move on with your day.

~Perfection Plumbing & Drain Cleaning Ltd. disclaimer: Clogs can be serious business if they are bad enough or deep enough into the system. You might need a plunger or a specialty drain product or even a professional plumber, to help you unplug your toilet. But hopefully, it won’t come to that.

For all the plumbing problems in your home, don’t hesitate to contact Perfection Plumbing for help.

20 Ways to Maximize Your Tax Return in 2022 from Hounjet Tastad Harpham your Trusted Saskatoon Accountants

Hounjet Tastad Harpham has decades of accounting experience working with clients across Saskatchewan. Their expert accounting advice is valued by clients ranging from individuals to businesses small and large. Hounjet Tastad Harpham is a  Trusted Saskatoon Accountanting firm and in this accounting tax tip, they share the ways you can maximize your Tax Return in 2022.

Maximize Your Tax Return With These 20 Helpful Tips From Hounjet Tastsad Harphman Accountants.

See how you can use tax credits and tax deductions to get more money back this tax season.

Every Canadian must file their own tax return every year, even if they have a spouse. There are ways to maximize your spousal tax situation using methods like income splitting and transferring deductions between each other. Generally, the spouse with the higher income and tax bill should maximize deductions first as they’re likely to be in a higher tax bracket.

Do you dread tax season?

If you’re expecting a refund or claiming any benefits or credits such as the GST/HST credit or Canada Child Benefit, it can work out well for you. In order to maximize your tax return, you need to calculate your taxable income first and then lower it using as many tax deductions and credits as possible. A deduction reduces your taxable income, while a credit minimizes the amount of tax you owe. You need to file your taxes by April 30, 2022. The deadline is extended to June 15, 2022, if you're self-employed or have a spouse or common-law partner who is self-employed.

There are hundreds of credits and deductions you can take advantage of we share 20 of the most common.

Childcare Expenses

If your child is under the age of 16 years old, you may be able to claim a deduction. Childcare expenses include daycare centres, summer camps, overnight boarding schools, and caregivers such as nannies. Generally, childcare expenses must be deducted by the spouse with a lower income.

Spousal & Child Support Payments

Support payments sent to a former spouse and/or children can have a noticeable impact on your tax bill. Tax rules will vary depending on the type: spousal or child support

Student Loan Interest

If you or your child is studying at a post-secondary institution, you can deduct the interest paid on a student loan if you received the loan under the Canada Student Loans Act, Canada Student Financial Assistance Act, Apprentice Loans Act, or similar laws in your province or territory. This deduction does not apply to something like a personal loan or line of credit. Apply this deduction if you owe taxes. Otherwise, it’s better to carry it forward. Interest can be carried forward and applied to any tax return for the next five years.

 Maximize your RRSP Contribution

Your RRSP contribution limit is 18% of your earned income from the last tax year, plus any unused amounts from previous years. Check out your latest notice of assessment or log into your CRA My Account to find out what your RRSP contribution limit is. It’s a good idea to maximize your RRSP contribution in any way you can. You can even transfer TFSA interest gains (which are tax-free) to bump up your RRSP contribution. If you don’t currently contribute to an RRSP (Registered Retirement Savings Plan), it’s not too late to benefit from a significant tax deduction for the 2021 tax year. You have until March 1, 2022, to contribute. Use Wealthsimple’s free RRSP and TFSA calculators for more insights on how you can maximize your savings. Read more: TFSA vs. RRSP in 2022: Comparing What’s Best for You

Property Taxes (owners) & Rental Payments (tenants)

Landlords can use Form T776 to claim property taxes for the period in which a rental property was available for rent. Employed and self-employed tenants can claim partial rent payments as a home office expense if they use their home for employment or business purposes.

Association & Union Dues

Most professional association fees and union fees are tax-deductible, therefore lowering your taxable income

Employment Expenses

You can deduct work expenses such as cell phone bills and office supplies if your employer asked you to purchase them. Educators can also claim up to $1,000 of eligible teaching supplies.

Tuition Expense

Post-secondary tuition fees can be deducted. Qualifying students can check the tax form from their educational institution to learn how much tuition fees were paid this year

Moving Expenses

If you moved at least 40 kilometres closer to your work, a new business, or for post-secondary schooling, you can claim expenses from that move. Qualifying expenses include storage costs, travel expenses, temporary living expenses, the cost of cancelling a lease, and more.

Medical & Charitable Expenses

You may receive a partial deduction for charitable donations and certain medical expenses, including any medical cannabis products you purchased as a patient. Spouses should consider pooling contributions on one spouse’s tax return for maximum benefit.

Home Buyers’ Amount

You can claim a $5,000 tax credit if you purchased your first home and did not live in another home owned by you or your partner in the past four years.

GST/HST New Housing Rebate

You may qualify for the GST/HST New Housing Rebate if you did substantial renovations or purchased or built a new home. A similar provision exists for landlords under certain conditions.

Provincial Credits

In addition to federal and provincial GST/HST credits, Saskatchewan has additional credits for certain segments of the population. These include safety-related home renovations for seniors in New Brunswick to climate action incentives in British Columbia. Check out Saskatchewan's website to see what credits you may be entitled to.

Capital Gains - RRSP & TFSA

Always try to leverage your TFSA and RRSP accounts because the interest earned in these accounts are tax-free. While this won’t create a tax deduction, it will help you grow your savings.

Write Off Capital Losses

If one of your investments goes sour and you sell it at a loss, you may be able to apply it against your taxable capital gains. If you don’t have enough capital gains to cover the loss, you can claim the leftover amount as a net capital loss. Net capital losses can be used to lower capital gains in any of the three preceding tax years or carried forward to future tax years. Keep in mind you can't deduct capital losses in tax-free accounts like RRSPs and TFSAs. Learn more about capital losses on the CRA website.

Self-employed Business Expenses

Small business owners can deduct various business expenses, including advertising costs, bank fees, office supplies, and travel expenses. Those who work from home can claim a portion of their utilities, insurance, and maintenance costs. Deductible amounts are based on what portion of the residence is used for business purposes.

Disability Tax Credit

The disability tax credit (DTC) helps disabled individuals and family members reduce the amount of income tax they pay. To qualify for the DTC, a medical practitioner must certify you’re living with a severe mental or physical disability. Payment amounts vary by province, but if you qualify for this tax credit, it could open the door to other benefits

Home Office Expenses

Did you work at home during the pandemic? If so, the CRA has implemented a new temporary flat rate method that makes it easier to claim deductions for home office expenses. You can claim $2 for each day you worked from home, up to a maximum of $400 (200 working days). There is also no need to calculate the size of your workspace, keep supporting documents, or submit Form T2200

Canada Workers Benefit

If you’re a low-income worker, you can claim the Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) when you file your taxes. The refundable tax credit provides up to $1,381 for single individuals and $2,379 for families. It also includes a disability supplement if you have an approved Disability Tax Credit Certificate (Form T2201) on file with the CRA. If you qualify, you can request an advance payment, which allows you to receive half of your benefit in four separate payments.

Canada Training Credit

The Canada Training Credit supports workers over age 26 by reducing barriers to professional development. It offers $250 every year ($ 5,000-lifetime limit) for eligible tuition and other course fees.
