WHY BUYING A NEW FURNACE SAVES YOU MONEY

The cost of gas and electricity is always on the rise, and it is becoming increasingly important to consider the energy efficiency of your home furnace. While the cost of a new furnace is a shock for most people, it is beneficial in the long run. Here are a few reasons why buying a new furnace can save you money.

Repair Costs

furnace repair costs on older furnaces get expensive - new furnaces save money

Newer furnaces save money as they require less repairs. As with anything that gets older, your furnace requires more repairs as it ages. Over time, constant repairs add up and become expensive. Especially when many call-outs or after-hours calls are required, often these costs will exceed that of a replacement furnace. If you find that service calls are becoming more frequent, it is likely time to purchase a new furnace.

Energy Efficiency

Newer furnaces save money as they are more energy efficient. Not only do old furnaces require more repairs, the cost of running and maintaining older furnaces is significantly greater. Overall, older furnace models consume more energy than newer models. Now that technology is more advanced, energy efficient and environmentally friendly furnace models exist and they are definitely better options.

It is worth noting that older furnace models may also be heating your home unevenly. Naturally, older models are not as efficient in operation or functionality. Older furnaces just cannot keep up with household demands. They become strained which leads to bill increases. Newer furnaces are able to produce more heat while using less energy, saving you money on your energy bills.

Environmental Benefits

newer furnaces are more energy efficient than older ones

Though the environmental benefits of newer furnaces are not always top of mind, they are surely significant. Using efficient heating systems has a positive impact on the environment. With energy-efficient furnaces, the use of fossil fuels and power stations is decreased. This results in reduced consumption of natural resources and less pollution. If everyone made the switch to a more energy-efficient furnace, imagine the magnitude of impact this would have on the environment.

Not only will a new furnace ensure more money remains in your pocket, but it will also provide you with peace of mind and a dependable source of heat for your home.

These are a few reasons why buying a new furnace can save you money. Be sure to schedule your routine furnace maintenance to ensure your system is running as it should. If you need any assistance with your furnace or home heating and cooling equipment, do not hesitate to contact our team at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning.

10 TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR FURNACE FOR WINTER

Our Saskatchewan winters are around the corner, and it’s time to ensure that your home is ready to combat the chilly Saskatoon days and frosty nights. One of the most crucial steps in winter preparation is getting your furnace in tip-top shape. A well-maintained furnace not only keeps you warm but also saves you money on energy bills. In this blog, we’ll provide you with 10 tips to prepare your furnace for winter.

  1. Schedule a Professional Inspection: Start by scheduling a furnace inspection with a JOB Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. qualified HVAC technician. They will check for any potential issues, clean essential components, and ensure that your furnace is running efficiently and safely.
  2. Replace or Clean Air Filters: Dirty or clogged air filters can reduce your furnace’s efficiency and worsen indoor air quality. Replace disposable filters or clean reusable ones before the heating season begins, and check them monthly throughout winter.
  3. Clean Vents and Ducts: Dust, debris, and even pests can accumulate in your vents and ducts, blocking airflow and reducing efficiency. Consider hiring a professional to clean them, improving air quality and furnace performance.
  4. Check for Leaks and Insulate: Inspect your home for drafts and seal any gaps around windows, doors, and vents. Proper insulation reduces heat loss and helps your furnace work less to maintain a comfortable temperature.
  5. Test the Thermostat: Ensure that your thermostat is functioning correctly. Replace the batteries if needed and program it to a comfortable and energy-efficient temperature schedule for winter.
  6. Lubricate Moving Parts: Regularly lubricate your furnace’s moving parts, such as bearings and motors, to reduce friction and extend their lifespan. Refer to your furnace’s manual for guidance.
  7. Check for Gas Leaks: If you have a gas furnace, it’s crucial to check for gas leaks. If you detect a gas odor or suspect a leak, immediately turn off the gas supply and contact a professional.
  8. Inspect the Flue and Venting: Check the flue and venting system for any blockages or damage. Proper venting is essential to prevent carbon monoxide from entering your home.
  9. Replace Old or Faulty Thermostats: Consider upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat if your current one is outdated. These devices offer greater control and energy-saving features.
  10. Stock Up on Supplies: Lastly, stock up on essential furnace supplies like air filters, spare parts, and a carbon monoxide detector. Having these items on hand can help you stay comfortable and safe throughout the winter.
Preparing your furnace for winter is a proactive step that ensures you’ll stay warm and cozy while also saving on energy costs. By following these ten tips, you’ll not only extend the life of your furnace but also enjoy a comfortable and efficient heating season. Don’t wait until the first frost – start your furnace maintenance today and embrace the winter season with confidence. Trusted Saskatoon Furnace Experts at JOB Heating and Air Conditioning Explain Why Your Furnace is Blowing Cold Air

JOB Heating & Air Conditioning Saskatoon is eager to provide the best possible customer experience. Their aim is to be a professional resource for our clients before, during, and after the sale! Their team takes pride in service knowledge of modern equipment and training. They are recognized by peers and offer sales, service, training & installations for residential, and commercial Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing systems in Saskatoon and the surrounding area. JOB Heating & Air are Trusted Saskatoon Furnace and Air Conditioning Experts. In their latest article, they discover reasons why your furnace is blowing cold air.

Is Your Furnace Blowing Cold Air?

This may be a sign that your furnace requires attention. Read on to discover reasons why your furnace is blowing cold air.

Your Furnace Has Not Warmed Up

Whenever it is the beginning of a heating cycle, you will get a blast of cold air when you turn on your furnace. Much like when you first turn on a faucet, cold water is going to flow out at first rather than hot. As your furnace warms up, it must first push out the cold air before warm air will blow out of your vents. If your furnace blows cold air briefly, this is likely the explanation. However, if warm air does not follow the cold air after a few minutes, it is time to call in an expert.

The Thermostat Setting Is Incorrect

Ensure the thermostat is set to “AUTO” instead of “ON”. When the thermostat is set to “ON”, the fan will continuously run even when the furnace is not in a heating cycle. This means that the fan will blow cold air throughout your home, instead of warm. The thermostat should always be on “AUTO” to ensure that the fan will only blow during a heating cycle.

The Flame Sensor Is Dirty

The flame sensor detects whether or not your furnace’s gas burners are lit. A dirty flame sensor will keep the gas burner from staying lit, and cause the burners to shut off. This results in cold air blowing from the vents, as the furnace does not have a heat source. Unless you are familiar with furnaces, a dirty flame sensor should always be cleaned by a professional to restore heat.

Your Furnace's Pilot Light Is Out

Especially if your furnace is older, cold air is a sign that the pilot light is out. If you are comfortable doing so, follow your furnace’s instructions on how to relight it. If the flame goes out again after a few minutes, contact a professional as technical work is likely necessary.

Your Furnace's Air Filter Is Clogged

When the air filter is clogged, airflow is restricted. Restricted airflow can cause your furnace to overheat. When your furnace overheats, this shuts down the burner resulting in cold air. Always replace a dirty air filter to ensure your furnace is functioning properly.

These are a few possible reasons why your furnace is blowing cold air. Be sure to schedule your routine furnace maintenance to ensure your furnace is safe to operate this winter. If you need any assistance with your furnace or home heating equipment, do not hesitate to contact our team at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning.

JOB Heating & Air Conditioning Trusted Saskatoon Furnace, A/C and Plumbing Pros For 10 Years

This series of articles highlights the businesses that have been with TrustedSaskatoon.com  since we launched in 2011. We want to thank them for trusting our team and recognize each of them individually for providing 10 years of OUTSTANDING service to the public of Saskatoon and surrounding areas! In this article, we celebrate and recognize Jeff and the team at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning—Trusted Saskatoon Furnace, A/C, and Saskatoon Plumbing Pros!

We are pleased to celebrate JOB Heating & Air Conditioning, a Trusted Saskatoon partner for over 10 years!

The JOB Heating & Air Conditioning team is well known for their Ssakatoon air conditioning, furnace, and plumbing work for residential and commercial customers. Jeff Bolton worked up from employee to partner, and he is now the trusted face of the company, which currently has six employees. Jeff has been in the HVAC and Plumbing industry since 1989. With his many years of plumbing and heating expertise, he has a clear vision and commitment to always putting the customer and his community first. Spending many years as a volunteer serving the community's greatest needs has given Jeff the right balance of drive and determination to do the right thing. He has a big heart and is dedicated to always putting the customer's needs first. He prides himself on JOB’s record of integrity, honesty, and service, and he takes being trusted very seriously.

As Jeff would say…”I do what I say and say what I do!”

“One of Jeff’s biggest challenges over the years has been competing with kijiji’s plumbers and other HVAC companies that don’t abide by reasonable industry standards or even properly insure or register their businesses. Companies that are often run by folks that over promise and under deliver, they often undercut on price to get the job and end up not delivering on the service. Many try to make it up by high pressure sales on work or products the customer may not need. This is the total opposite of how Jeff and his team operates and as someone who was ripped off by an unscrupulous company myself I am wary. I am happy to say that I have used JOB personally several times over the last 10 years and the experience is always stellar."
- Sara Wheelwright, Trusted Founder

The JOB Heating & Air team also prides itself on being recognized as a leader in water heating system technology for new in-floor and boiler installations in Saskatoon. Jeff is passionate about what he does, and his enthusiasm is infectious. What you see truly is what you get with Jeff. He is authentic and cares deeply about always leaving a good impression with clients. It is obvious that he values and supports his team. That’s why he wanted to create a business where people love to work!

When asked what drives Jeff, he explains his mantra around the shop.

“We do every job as if it was our own mother’s house. We treat each other (my coworkers) with respect and dignity and that just becomes the way that we treat everyone, especially our customers.”

A great example of why JOB Heating & Air Conditioning has been a 10-year Trusted Saskatoon Partner.

Trusted Saskatoon Furnace Experts at JOB Heating & Air Discuss Cracked Furnace Heat Exchangers

JOB Heating & Air Conditioning Saskatoon is eager to provide the best possible customer experience. Their aim is to be a professional resource for our clients before, during, and after the sale! Their team takes pride in service knowledge of modern equipment and training. They are recognized by peers, as  JOB offers sales, service, training & installations for residential, and commercial Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing systems in Saskatoon and area. In their latest article, they discuss what causes cracked furnace heat exchangers and why they are a problem.

Cracked Furnace Heat Exchangers: What Causes Them and Why They Are A Problem

The heat exchanger is the part of your furnace that is responsible for generating hot air. To create heat, your furnace burns natural gas. When gas is burned, exhaust byproducts travel through the heat exchanger. As the exhaust passes through the furnace’s exhaust outlet, metal is heated. Simultaneously, this hot metal heats the air. From there, your furnace system distributes hot air to your home through your air ducts.

In order to function properly, the heat exchanger must remain sealed. That is why cracks are detrimental.

What Causes A Cracked Heat Exchanger?

The air inside your furnace and heat exchanger gets extremely hot. As a result, this extreme heat causes the metal inside the heat exchanger to expand and contract. Though well-maintained heat exchangers are built to tolerate this heat, eventually this stress causes cracks.

If your heat exchanger is several years old, stress cracks are common. However, if your heat exchanger is under 10 years old, there are other causes of cracking. Causes of premature heat exchanger cracking include limited airflow, and your furnace being too large for your home.

Limited Airflow

Limited airflow to your gas furnace is the result of blocked registers. If registers in the home are blocked, pressure builds up inside the furnace which causes cracks. It is important to note that a clogged furnace filter or obstructed air ducts are also causes of heat exchanger cracks.

Is Your Furnace Too Large For Your Home?

If your furnace is too large for your home, this is an issue because it may ‘short cycle’, meaning it turns on and off frequently. Therefore, your heat exchanger expands and contracts more, resulting in overuse of your furnace system and premature cracks.

Why Cracked Heat Exchangers Are A Problem

If they are not dealt with, cracked furnace heat exchangers can pose a serious safety risk. If you notice a strange smell coming from your furnace or signs of rust along the exterior, this may indicate that there is a problem.

Carbon Monoxide Leak

Because heat exchangers contain carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrous oxide, a crack in your heat exchanger means these harmful gases could escape into the air ducts of your home. A carbon monoxide leak can result in illness and even death.

Flame-Out or Fire

Another risk of a cracked furnace heat exchanger is a flame-out or fire. When gas and air combust in the heat exchanger, the gas builds up. This build-up of gas often reaches a high enough volume to be explosive. As the gas becomes explosive, it will force flames and air pressure out of any hole it can find, such as a crack in the heat exchanger.

Unfortunately, unless your carbon monoxide detector beeps or you notice rust, you may be unaware your heat exchanger is cracked. In order to know for sure, an inspection by a professional technician is required. If you suspect your furnace heat exchanger is cracked, it is important to contact a technician immediately so it can be replaced in a timely manner.

These are just a few causes of cracked furnace heat exchangers and why they are a problem. Be sure to schedule your routine furnace maintenance to ensure your furnace is safe to operate this winter. If you need any assistance with your furnace or home heating equipment, do not hesitate to contact our team at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning.
