Faux Wood vs Real Wood Blinds

One of the most commonly asked questions in our industry is: What is the difference between faux wood vs real wood blinds?  The best answer we can offer involves educating our clients on the features and benefits of both selections.

Our horizontal faux wood blind collections give you the best of both worlds! They have the look of luxurious real wood blinds at a price of about 15 to 25% less. Because faux wood blinds are made from a synthetic material (usually PVC or a polymer), they also offer easy maintenance and care.

You won’t have to worry about warping, cracking, or splitting in environments of high moisture or high humidity, making this an ideal product for bathrooms, kitchens, garages, kid’s play areas, etc. Available in solid vinyl, or in a composition of vinyl and wood for added strength, faux wood blinds provide superior insulation.

Wood blinds, on the other hand, offer a warm and inviting look to any decor. Wood has long been associated with strength and aesthetic beauty.

Both faux wood and real wood blinds come with a decorative valance at the top as a standard feature. Both are aesthetically pleasing choices to dress up your windows! It really comes down to personal preference and/or budget. With either selection, you can’t go wrong. After all, 2″ horizontal blinds continue to be the #1 choice in window coverings across North America for more than a decade.

Richly stained or painted wood blinds offer a wider selection of colours than faux wood, as well as other upgraded options and features. We often recommend real wood blinds when our clients need to match a particular wood stain or a custom paint trim colour. Keep in mind that there is no comparison between faux stains and the rich beauty of a true wood stain, but we do carry wood grain-like options in our faux collections as well.

Wood blinds are also an ideal choice for wider windows. Because of the lighter weight of real wood blinds, we can generally accommodate a wider window opening with a single-blind. This is always a preferred choice over two blinds in one window opening!

You can order your wood blinds with the popular no-holes option to stop light from leaking into your rooms or opt for decorative fabric tapes. Some of their wood blind collections are available with a motorized or cordless option, for ease of operation and child safety.

Here Heather shares 10 Window Covering Trends:

These popular window fashions will add a special design touch to any room!

When you stand in a beautifully decorated room, notice how your eye is drawn to the windows — they’re inevitably the focal point that sets the tone and the “bones” of any successful decorating plan. How you accessorize your windows affects not only the mood inside your home but also the appearance from outside.

When you are shopping for window treatments, don’t buy blindly. Take some time to do some research, and come armed with info to help you make better choices. Here are the 10 most popular window treatment trends now, to help with your decision making.

1. Neutrals still rule. “Whites, off-whites and other neutral window coverings almost always work best,” says Lyn Peterson, author, mother of four, HGTV expert, and creative director of Motif Designs in Mount Vernon, New York. And don’t worry about durability. According to Peterson, “We don’t sit or walk on them, so they don’t wear out. My stair carpet is in tatters but my natural linen-colored shades look like new, and they’re both twenty years old.” Neutrals are timeless, too. You might change up your paint, furniture, lighting, and fabrics, but will still want safer neutral tones for the windows, to weather your decorating whims. But safer neutrals doesn’t have to mean boring – roman shades, cellular, roller and pleated shades come in a wide variety of fabrics and subtly different color tones.

2. Wovens are all the rage. Natural or synthetic wovens give character, ambiance, and texture to flat walls. Look for trendy woven styles made from materials like bamboo and grassweave. They’ll create a fresh look for modern dining areas or sun rooms.

3. Aluminum blinds add retro glamour. The fifties and sixties styles are cool again in home design. They work best in a 2-inch slat width with wide tapes — and are also less likely than metal mini blinds to bend out of shape when dusted. Metal looks striking in a home office, library, or game room, to add polish and a sophisticated edge. More perks: Metal blinds are easy to clean with a Swiffer, and are easy on the budget.

4. Sheer fabrics let the outside in. “I love beautiful transparent sheers on a window,” says Sally Morse, top trend eye and director of creative services for window wear powerhouse Hunter Douglas. “They tease you with what might be behind them and throw light and shadows into a room.” They can also help small rooms look bigger, by letting in the sunshine and opening up the view to the sky, rather than closing it in, as an opaque fabric does. Sheers look lovely in sitting rooms.

5. Less is more. “We’re omitting upper kitchen cabinets in favor of more and larger windows in today’s kitchens, so they’re brighter and lighter,” says Peterson. “And we’re moving toward undertreating the windows we do have. Do the basics first — you can always layer on more later.” Start with understated shades and see how you like that look before adding busier swags or patterned valances. Our lines include soft solar shades that look clean and spare. They help block some of the light without totally blocking the view, which is why you wanted sizable windows in the first place.

6. Plantation shutters are a style investment. They are worth every cent, and the look is timeless. Shutters are a great choice because they add elegance to your home – they are just as inviting at an island retreat as in pure white at your kitchen window. The best wood ones are almost like finely crafted furniture, with a custom fit, and have smart levers (or wands) instead of dangling cords for adjusting the louvers. Shutters are also available in a very durable polysatin for high humidity areas.

7. Color rocks your world. Patterns and rich colors work especially well in spaces like dining rooms, which might otherwise be all wood. The color plays against the plainer table, chairs, and sideboard. Rooms that don’t have a lot of upholstery or texture really welcome the oomph of a strong window treatment, and so do rooms most often used after dark. A bold hue offers more privacy at night than a sheer, especially for bedrooms.

8. Clutch mechanisms are a sleek plus. “The tasseled crocheted pull cords on Grandma’s shades always worked, but they went out of fashion and we went cordless,” says Peterson. “But that meant pulling the side or center, and the shades were always akimbo.” Streamlined clutch mechanisms — which lift and lower window treatments via a chain affixed to the wall — are discreet, durable, and keep shades even. Made in the Shade Blinds Saskatoon offers products which include safety-tested, clutch-driven lifts, many cordless lift options, and even motorization on many styles, so window treatments look neat and work efficiently all through the house.

9. Fine-tune the light to your liking. Top down/bottom up shades provide more options for letting the sunshine in or keeping it out — you may want more when working in your kitchen, and less when you have to sit at your computer and don’t want a glare. Our collections include many top down/bottom up styles and also shades in room-darkening fabrics.

10. Honeycombs = sweet energy savings. Cellular shades and insulating blinds have neatly arranged pockets, or cells, not unlike a honeybee’s handiwork, which help block summer heat and winter chill — and help lower your utility bills. Try them in a guest room, bathroom, or anywhere you want a well-trimmed look with some energy savings to boot.

Made In The Shade Blinds your Trusted Saskatoon Blinds & Window Coverings Expert tip on Custom Drapery

Why Choose Custom Drapery?

Choosing to go the route of customizing draperies and curtains for your home can sometime be a tough pill to swallow, but only when it comes to the price. So what is the benefit of paying for custom versus buying ready made? It’s all in the details, details, details.

Window dressing is a lot like choosing articles of clothing. If your clothes are not the right fit or made from poor quality material, the finished look won’t be flattering. And like clothing, there are cheap, trendy throwaway options and classic designer draperies that will be worth handing down – or getting altered over time.

The major differences between buying ready-made curtains for under $100 and ordering custom draperies start with size. Prefab curtains are a one-size-fits-all application. Width and length are standardized and will therefore force you to mold your window to the drape rather than the other way around. A window that deserves to have a rod hung well above it’s frame will suffer if that drapery treatment can only be hung from one standard height. Where a treatment could be made to give a window or room height and drama now faces the overall feel of being skimpy.

Lining and fullness also add to the benefit of custom made draperies. The overall quality of a lining and outer fabric in a ready-made drape is often cheap resulting in a flat or lifeless look when hung. Custom drapes will look fuller and thicker simply based on a better lining and higher quality fabrics used. Fullness too plays a part. Custom drapes are going to be a lot fuller because they are constructed using a minimum of two and a half times fullness (across the window), so if your window is 100 inches you fabric is 250 inches or more creating proper full and luxurious looking pleats that drape well. Custom made drapery is especially important for closing drapes or wide window coverage because each width or panel is seamed together creating one solid panel that is “split” wherever desired. The pattern (if there is one) can be matched properly and seams are tucked away to the back of the pleat and panels then appear seamless!

Window dressings are the finishing touches on the space, so choose them carefully and with consideration to the application. We offer consultations with photos to discuss initial project scope and fabric selection. Professional check measures are completed before any work gets underway. Contact us today @ 306-280-0632 to inquire after your drapery needs or to answer any preliminary questions you may have.
