Have you ever asked yourself: How do I teach my dog to stop begging at the table? How do I prevent my dog from getting in the trash? Or how do I get my dog to stop jumping on the kitchen counter? This blog will address all three of those questions, so you can worry less about your dog begging for food.

How to Stop Your Pet from Jumping on the Kitchen Counter

First things first: there is such a thing as too many paws in the kitchen! If you are hosting guests it may be beneficial to keep pets out of the kitchen when you are prepping food. The last thing guests want on their plate is a few cat hairs. Not only is it a disturbance to the meal, but you don’t need the added chaos when you’re already stressed about mastering your grandma’s turkey recipe.

One way to curb the risk and nix this habit is to introduce new boundaries around your home. For example, you can add a Shields® Gate to the doorway of your kitchen, so your pet can maneuver throughout your home without going in any off-limit areas (counters and trash).

How to Stop Your Dog from Begging at the Table

After your meal is prepared, it is easy to feel sorry for your dog and slide some scraps off the table. We all know at least one guilty dog parent who says they won’t feed their dog at the table and then drops food as it begs. But this only rewards that behaviour and encourages more begging! This is one reason we recommend creating a wider boundary to avoid begging at the table in the first place.

Our most comprehensive indoor solution, the Indoor Shields® Plus Solution helps pets avoid medium-sized areas like a dining room table, kitchen island or commercial-grade range. The signal field works up to 12 feet in diameter, so you and your guests can eat in peace without the temptation of treating your pet.

How to Prevent Your Dog from Getting in the Trash

Survived cooking without your cat stealing food from the counter? Check. Finished eating without your dog begging at the table? Check. Prevent your dog from getting in the trash during clean up? Almost check. Post-meal boundaries are just as important, which is why it's critical that your dog doesn't get in the trash while you're throwing away bones from meat.

It's important to know what foods are bad for cats and dogs so you can be sure to keep your pet out of harms way. We've put together a list of foods to be cautious of:

  1. Onions
  2. Salads with Grapes/Raisins
  3. Salty Snack Food
  4. Casseroles
  5. Yeast Dough
  6. Nuts (typically contains high amounts of oils and fats)
  7. Ham (meats with high fat are dangerous for already overweight pets)
  8. Anything heavy with milk or butter (can cause diarrhea)
  9. Cranberries (unlike grapes, cranberries contain healthy vitamins for pets, but the high amounts of sugar can be bad)
  10. Bones (risk of puncturing, splintering or choking – especially cooked bones!)
  11. Dessert (particularly chocolate desserts or desserts containing nutmeg and cinnamon)
So now that you know why it's important to keep your dog out of the trash, the next question is how to do that. Invisible Fence® Brand’s Micro Shields® Solution is the perfect solution to protect your pets from eating leftovers out of the trash. It is the most discreet way to teach your pet to avoid smaller spaces. The circular signal field adjusts up to three feet across, so you can provide safe indoor boundaries for food-driven pets.

The Trusted Community Welcomes The Kinsmen Foundation -TeleMiracle As Your Newest Trusted Saskatoon Non Profit

Trusted Saskatoon team ran a contest on the Trusted Saskatoon Facebook page at the end of 2018 to find a new category for the Trusted Saskatoon directory. We received 100's of nominations, from children's activities to fencing. However, there was a clear winner; with over 200 nominations, we were thrilled that the new category was Trusted Saskatoon NON-PROFITS!

This was such a good fit, as we have always had a strong community focus; in fact, Trusted was proud to be recognized as the recipient of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce ABEX Award for Community in 2017.

In the fall of 2023, we felt it was time to extend the love, and we said farewell and good luck to two of the Saskatoon Non-profits we had supported and promoted for 5 years as Trusted Partners, Saskatoon Kinette's and SCAT- Street Cat Rescue. We are thrilled to announce that The Kinsmen Foundation - TeleMiracle is our newest non-profit partner.

The Trusted Saskatoon team is thrilled to welcome the Kinsmen Foundation - TeleMiracle to the Trusted Saskatoon community.

Carman  introduced us to the organization in 2022, and we are in awe at all they do for this province! We look forward to helping them reach even more people through our networks and assisting them in raising as much money as possible through the 2024 TeleMiracle Telethon, which takes place in Regina February 24th and 25th

The TeleMiracle Legacy

The history of TeleMiracle stretches back to 1977, when it was first introduced as an annual telethon organized by the Kinsmen and Kinettes of Saskatchewan. Over the years, it has become a cherished Saskatchewan tradition, as much a part of the province's cultural fabric as wheat fields and prairie sunsets.

Every year, TeleMiracle unites people across Saskatchewan with a shared purpose: to raise funds to support individuals with medical expenses, special needs, and mobility challenges. The telethon is more than just a fundraiser; it is a symbol of hope, unity, and the indomitable spirit of the people of Saskatchewan.

The Impact of TeleMiracle

TeleMiracle's impact on Saskatchewan cannot be overstated. The funds raised through this annual event go to support a wide range of programs and services, including medical equipment, travel assistance, and other vital resources for individuals facing life-altering challenges. See an example of their impact in the video below.

The Kinsmen Foundation, through TeleMiracle, has played a crucial role in transforming lives and providing much-needed assistance. Many families and individuals have found hope and relief through their initiatives. The positive impact of TeleMiracle extends not only to those directly assisted but also to the entire province. It reflects the compassion and generosity that define the Saskatchewan community.

A Team with Huge Hearts

At the heart of TeleMiracle's success is the remarkable team of dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to make it all happen. The Kinsmen Foundation's dedicated employees, who work tirelessly behind the scenes all year, the Kinsmen and Kinettes of Saskatchewan, along with countless volunteers, have shown unwavering commitment and enormous hearts in their efforts to organize the annual TeleMiracle telethon. “The Kinsmen Foundation is an amazing organization with a genuine mission to help Saskatchewan residents with miracles of mobility equipment and much needed financial support when they have nowhere else to turn. I’m so humbled and grateful to be able to give my time and talents to making our province a better place, one individual and one family at a time. TeleMiracle is truly rooted in Saskatchewan with such a long-standing tradition of success, and without our generous TeleMIracle donors, who are our true Miracle Makers, we couldn’t do what we do in Helping People Every Day. Thank you, Saskatchewan!” – Carman Praski, Fund Development Manager, Kinsmen Foundation

Many pet owners struggle with keeping their dogs out of their gardens and flower beds. Not only do you want to protect your landscaping, but you also want to keep your dog from accidentally eating harmful plants or compost. To help protect your dog and your garden, we put together our top tips on how to keep your dog from digging in your flower bed.

Why is my dog digging in my flower beds?

Before trying to change your pet’s behaviour, it is important to understand why that behaviour occurs. Dogs can dig up the garden for several reasons. Many dogs do not like to use the bathroom where they play. For these dogs, your secluded flower beds are the perfect place to relieve themselves away from their activity space.

Dogs also use dirt as a way to cool off. For some dogs, rolling in the dirt from your flower bed or garden after digging can provide the perfect cool down on a hot Summer's day. While some dogs have practical reasons for digging up your garden, others can simply dig out of boredom.

Ways to prevent your dog from digging in your flower bed.

There are several different methods to keeping your dog from digging up your flower beds or garden. In some cases, giving your dog plenty of stimulating exercise can prevent digging caused by boredom. Providing your dog with toys while they are outside can keep him distracted and out of your flower beds.

Another solution is Invisible Fence® Brand’s Outdoor Shields® Solutions. Our Outdoor Shields are Outdoor Shields are Invisible® barriers that help keep your dog out of the landscaping and other outdoor trouble spots — like garbage cans, pools, grills and fire pits. There are certain things only cat owners understand. In addition to how to keep cats from scratching your furniture and how to keep cats from pooping in your yard, the other most frequently asked how-to question for feline companions is how to keep your cat off the counter. Lucky for you, we put together a short video from our Certified Pet Trainer, Sandy Benes, with tips on how to keep your cat off the counter.

Why Do Cats Jump on the Counter?

The key to preventing your cat from jumping up on your counter is understanding why your cat is jumping on the counter in the first place. Cats jump on the counter for a variety of reasons including looking for food or a safe secluded area. Cats naturally also like to be elevated and counters provide the perfect location for them to get a wider view of their territory.

Solutions to Keep My Cat Off the Counter

Prevent your cat from jumping on the counter by using common household items like tin foil or double-sided sticky tape. The sound and feel of these on your cat's paws work as a deterrent to keep them off your counter.

Another product to stop your cat from jumping on your counter is Invisible Fence® Brand's Indoor Shields® Solutions. Indoor Shields units provide safe, Invisible® Boundaries to keep your cat away from certain areas like your counters.

Trusted Saskatoon Furnace & Duct Cleaners at Bridge City Duct Cleaning Tip About Commercial Ductwork in Winter

Trusted Saskatoon Furnace & Duct Cleaners Bridge City Duct Cleaning provides both residential duct cleaning and commercial duct cleaning and furnace maintenance services. Their team is professionally trained, qualified, bonded, and factory furnace and duct cleaning technicians. In their latest article, they explain the importance of commercial ductwork in winter.

Commercial Ductwork in Winter

As our Saskatchewan winter approaches, Saskatoon businesses must ensure their commercial HVAC systems are prepared to handle the challenges of the colder months. One critical aspect of this preparation is maintaining and optimizing commercial ductwork in Winter. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the importance of commercial ductwork in winter and provide essential tips to keep your system running efficiently.

Temperature Control

Commercial ductwork plays a pivotal role in maintaining temperature control within your business. During winter, keeping the indoor environment warm and comfortable is crucial for the well-being of your employees and customers. Ductwork is responsible for distributing heated air throughout the building, ensuring that every corner remains adequately warm.

Energy Efficiency

A well-maintained and properly insulated ductwork system can significantly enhance energy efficiency during the winter months. It helps to minimize heat loss and ensures that the warm air generated by your HVAC system reaches its intended destination. This, in turn, can lead to lower heating costs and a reduced carbon footprint.

Preventing Cold Spots

Without efficient ductwork, some areas within your commercial space may experience cold spots. These cold pockets can be uncomfortable for employees and customers and may even lead to increased absenteeism and discomfort. By maintaining your ductwork, you can ensure even heat distribution, eliminating cold spots and maintaining a consistent temperature throughout your establishment.

Reducing HVAC Strain

A well-maintained ductwork system can reduce the strain on your HVAC equipment. When ducts are clogged with dust, debris, or other obstructions, your HVAC system must work harder to push heated air through the ducts. This extra strain can lead to premature wear and tear on your equipment, potentially resulting in costly repairs or replacements. Regular duct cleaning and maintenance can extend the life of your HVAC system.

Preventing Moisture Issues

During Winter, condensation can accumulate in ductwork, leading to moisture problems like mold and mildew growth. These issues cannot only affect indoor air quality but also pose health risks to occupants. Regular inspection and maintenance of your ductwork can help identify and address moisture-related concerns before they become major problems.

Air Quality

Winter often means sealed buildings with limited fresh air circulation. As a result, indoor air quality can suffer, leading to health issues for those inside. Clean and well-maintained ductwork can help mitigate this by ensuring that the air circulating through your HVAC system is free from contaminants, allergens, and pollutants.

In the cold Saskatoon winter months, commercial ductwork becomes an indispensable component of maintaining a comfortable, energy-efficient, and healthy indoor environment. Regular maintenance, cleaning, and insulation of your ductwork are essential steps to ensure it performs optimally during the winter season. By taking proactive measures to address any issues with your commercial ductwork, you can ensure that your business operates smoothly and that your employees and customers remain comfortable throughout the colder Saskatchewan months.
