The Importance of Trust.

When calling someone for help, especially help in your own home, you really need to ask yourself – who can you trust? If you aren’t working with someone you can trust, how can you have any confidence you are being treated fairly, and the person working for you has your best interests at heart?

Jeffs Real Saskatoon Heating and Furnace Calls.

I was asked to go help two different ladies. Both lived on their own and had furnace issues. The first lady was what I would describe as everyone’s grandma, you know the type, sweet as sugar. The second was a single mother who was also a joy to meet. Both had very legitimate concerns with their furnaces. The first lady simply asked me to drop by and listen to her furnace because she thought that something was not right with it. I was in her furnace room for maybe 5 seconds and I could tell that the bearings in her inducer motor were on their last legs. We had one of our technicians over to her house later that afternoon to change the inducer motor and it turned out just fine. By calling me, she saved herself a possible (more likely probable) after hours call due to having no heat.

The second lady asked me to come and give her a quote on a new furnace because she was under the impression that her furnace needed to be changed. When I showed up I commented that the house was nice and warm. She told me that her brother had been by and found a loose wire on the furnace. I cycled the furnace on and off a few times and I believe that he was correct. Although this furnace is quite old I suggested she budget the appropriate amount to replace the furnace within 3 to 7 years. I explained what parts would cost her if they needed to be replaced. Of course, I didn’t charge her for my time because we don’t charge for furnace replacement quotes.

The trust issues with Saskatoon heating and furnace contractors

What I realized when listening to these ladies is that there is a real trust issue with companies that they hire to come into their homes in Saskatoon. Who can you trust and how do you know you can trust them? This is the very reason that Trusted Saskatoon was started. A wonderful lady who was a single mother had a company charge her a ridiculous amount of money to change a P-trap in her plumbing system in 2010.

She thought there should be a better way to find businesses you can trust, so she created trustedsaskatoon.com and launched it along with her 5 Trusted guarantees in 2011.

The 5 Trusted Guarantees are:

  1. Provide the service and quality promised.
  2. Complete the job on time.
  3. Charge the price quoted with NO surprises.
  4. Communicate honestly and be responsive to customer needs.
  5. Resolve any issues with customer satisfaction in mind.

To be a Trusted Saskatoon plumbing and heating company JOB, along with every Trusted business, must adhere to these 5 promises. I believe that these promises are the foundation of good customer service, and that integrity and honesty must be maintained at all times in everything we do. We use this approach when dealing with our customers or dealing with our vendors. By maintaining this sense of integrity, honesty, and respect no matter who we are dealing with, those values ingrain themselves in the culture of our company – acting according to these values just becomes the norm.

JOB Heating and Air Conditioning is a company you can trust with your Saskatoon heating and furnace worries.

Who can you trust with Saskatoon heating and furnace issues

GIBBON’S SASKATOON FURNACE TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

Check Your Furnace Switch

Often this switch (that looks like a light switch) can be accidentally turned off.

Furnace Venting (High Efficient)

With a high efficient furnace, there are 2 plastic pipes going outside, one is an exhaust and the other an intake. When it is cold outside, these pipes can frost over or with lots of snowfall get plugged with snow and this causes the furnace to turn off on a safety switch. Visually check the piping for blockage, if there is, clear and power down the furnace and turn back on – this will reset the board and unit should start up.

Check the Thermostat

One of the most common issues with a furnace is that it stops operating normally due to issues with the thermostat. It could be as simple as the thermostat being turned off, or maybe it isn’t set correctly. You always want to make sure that it is set to the “heat” setting and that the temperature you want is set properly.

Check Your Breaker Panel

One of the more embarrassing fixes is a thrown breaker. There are many reasons for a breaker to trip, but the important thing is to quickly check. Hopefully, your electrical panel is labeled, but if not, you can usually see when a breaker is tripped. It is possible that your furnace and blower are on separate circuits, so look carefully.

Change the Furnace Filter Monthly

You would be surprised at how quickly dirty filters can degrade the performance of a furnace. When filters are dirty, your furnace has to work much harder to blow air through the dirt and dust on the filter. As the pressure builds up, it could cause the blower to shut down. It’s as easy as checking your filters on a monthly basis and changing them if they are dirty.

Clean the Fan Unit Regularly

Similar to a dirty furnace, a dirty or clogged fan unit will also make it harder for your furnace to push air through your house like it was designed to do. Removing a furnace fan unit requires a bit of technical know-how, but it is fairly simple and safe. Once you have it out, you can clean it with a brush or cloth, and a vacuum.

Check Ductwork for Debris and Joints

Sometimes it seems like it is only one or a few rooms that are not getting heat. If this happens, quickly check to see if all of the registers are opened properly and the cold air returns are not blocked. It is also a good idea to check all accessible ductwork to see if there are any issues with joints and seams.

Check the Gas Valve

It is also possible that the gas valve could have been accidentally bumped or shut off. It can happen if working around the furnace, moving things or even just cleaning up. Gas valves are labeled clearly and you can feel safe turning it to the on position. Once you have it in the right position, the furnace should start up again.

Common Repair Issues that Require Expertise

Wear and Tear on Furnace Parts

Your furnace parts will eventually break down and start to wear out. There are a lot of parts that can wear out including Belts, bearings, filters, motors, switches, fan blades, pilot, and burners—all should be regularly checked to ensure they are in good working order.

Thermostat Errors

Your furnace thermostat is the brain of your heating system. It is possible that the furnace is working just fine even though the thermostat is failing and causing it to act like there is something wrong. Troubleshooting a thermostat can be tricky and a trained technician will have all of the testing tools required.

Ignition Issues

The ignition and pilot system is critical to your furnace for producing heat. Without a properly functioning ignition system, it is not possible for your furnace to produce heat. There are many ignition systems including electric-powered (electrical spark), and gas or hot surface ignition.

Strange Noises or Rumbles

Furnaces have moving parts with bearings like the blower motor, and as a result, there is some normal noise. However, if you begin to hear strange or intermittent sounds like clangs, bangs, rumbles, rattles, squeaks, or other noises, this can indicate all kinds of potential problems. Your heater may have ingested outside debris or been inhabited by household visitors. There may also be loose or detached parts.

Jeff Bolton Owner of JOB Heating and Air Conditioning Shares why "Good Enough" Usually Isn't!

Saskatoon, if you are looking for a Trusted company to help you with your home or business Heating or Cooling system problems or to find the best and most high efficient air conditioner or furnace for your home, J.O.B Heating and Air Conditioning is who you need to call! get to spend a good deal of time explaining to customers what you should ask for when choosing a contractor. We have all heard about the usual things. "Check the reviews", yes I agree that reviews are important but how many of the are legitimate? How many reviews are there because the contractor earned them and how many are there because he paid for them. How many are there because he has a disgruntled employee or a ruthless competitor and of course how many are there because they are real?

Further to the reviews here are a few things to notice when they are in your house. What are they looking at and what questions are they asking? My Dad tells me that I have 2 ears and one mouth so it should be 2/3 listening and 1/3 talking. What that means is the contractor should be asking questions about your home but also how you live in that home? How can he or she offer you a product or service without knowing how you intend on using that product or service? In the case of an air conditioner are they looking to ensure that the unit can be placed where you would like it? Or are they looking for the most direct route that would save them time and money? Are they just automatically going to the "best" option because well its the Mercedes who wouldn't want it? In reality most of us drive  Chevy's or Fords.

I believe that there are a couple of documents that they should show you. You should see their contractor license. In the case of heating contractors they should show you their gas licence. So many times guys hang their shingle out and say I can put that water heater in for you and the never take out a permit so the inspector never knows to go see the job. They end up making a mistake when installing it that causes you to have no hot water at the most inopportune of times.  Further to that if that contractor doesn't have a gas licence when the gas inspector issues a deficiency he has to issue it to the homeowner and if the homeowner does not correct it they could loose their gas service.

Another document you should ask to see is their Workman's Compensation Board letter of good standing. This lets you know that they have a commitment to safety and they pay there premiums to the WCB which gives you an indication of their financial status. You should also ask to see their insurance certificate. How much coverage do they have? Is it enough to cover the worst case scenario? Check the dates, is everything you are seeing current?

If you are going to get a job done and you are researching the job and the equipment on the Internet please be careful with where you are getting that information. Is it a trusted source such as a manufacturer or a professional group or is it just some blow hard on a message board. When you are planning on researching equipment or contract work I think the best place to start is the glossary. Learn what the terms used are and mean. In the heating business we use terms such as delta T. Sounds impressive right? All it means the the difference between the supply temperature and return temperature. I've heard many contractors say "if you can't dazzle them with knowledge baffle them with BS". This can't be farther from the truth. If he can't explain what he's doing or selling in terms that you will understand then he doesn't completely get it himself.

Now having said that sometimes in contracting there isn't absolutes, that is to say you never know what you'll find in a wall or under a cement floor. When dealing with new products the contractor will have to research it and get back to you. Don't be afraid if a contractor tells you this. This shows diligence and a commitment to getting it right the first time.

Every job isn't going to go perfectly the best contractors are the one's that have a game plan in place to deal with problems when they arise. Having a plan means the problem gets repaired quickly and with as little disruption to the homeowner as possible. Remember even Mike Homes makes mistakes, he just gets to edit them.

A Real Plumbing Story

Recently, while doing a renovation in a very old commercial building, we found, as with a good majority of older structures, that the building had been neglected with many items falling into disrepair.  Some repairs were made incorrectly that negatively affected the structural integrity of the building. As we progressed with the reno, one item after another would crop up causing a one step forward and two steps back approach.

Two crucial steps  that affect any job are the deadline and total cost of that job. This one was no different, the deadline was fast approaching and many people’s lives were going to be negatively affected by missing this deadline. Professional contracting companies are legislated to put a high priority on safety no matter what the scenario. We attend safety courses offered by the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association or by retail suppliers to demonstrate our commitment to safety. The information we garner from the classes is very beneficial to our day to day operations. But what happens when push comes to shove and a deadline is looming, you have many hours and much material on a job that you haven't been paid for? Do you accept that there is "acceptable risk" because of the deadline or that you have money owing to you? I believe the answer to this is, no. Receiving a fine from the Government notwithstanding, I'm the person that after an accident happens will have to go and bring the wife, husband, Mother or Father to the hospital or dare I say morgue. To me this would be the hardest thing I would ever have to do in my life and if I was to ignore a safety concern because of a deadline or budget, how could I look my own family in the eye? As business owners we cannot be on every job site all the time. We rely on our supervisors and employees to bring these concerns to our attention and to deal with them promptly. As sub contractors we have an obligation to bring the safety concern to the General or building owner. But what happens when their good judgement is clouded by that looming deadline or budget restraint? Our training tells us that it doesn't matter. Work must stop and corrections must be in place to ensure the safety of all people on that job site, not just your own worker.

On this job site I mentioned, this was exactly what took place. The instructors in all the classes we have been taking said this would happen but it doesn't really prepare you for the reality when it does. I found myself with my team having an argument about what is considered safe and what measure's should be taken before we continue with work. The irony of this situation was this argument was taking place right beside a broken ladder owned by another trade or the general / owner himself. This was a metaphor for his safety plan on his job site. I had a hard decision to make, forget about the deadline and the financial cost or use "acceptable risk" and hope for the best. That's when I thought " do I want to make that call to a wife, or a new mother?" The answer was emphatically, no.

Upon reflection the valuable lesson that I learned was that safety has no price. Professional contractors of any kind believe and live this every day. Yes sometimes safety can be taken to the extreme or taken advantage of. It is the professional contractor and his commitment to ongoing learning and behavioural change that will make the correct decision when the time comes.

When you choose a contractor you should ask about their commitment to safety and be prepared yourself as the home owner or building owner to make the site safe. Or it could be you having to make the dreaded call to that young mother.

Gibbon Heating and Air your Trusted Saskatoon Air Conditioning and Furnace experts share a tip on Return Air

Gibbon Heating & Air Conditioning has been serving Saskatoon and surrounding areas for over 25 Years, Gibbon is a "Total Service" company with trained technicians who are able to provide customers with solutions to all their SASKATOON Heating & Air Conditioning requirements!

Here they share a tip on Return Air:

In many homes return air struggles to find its way back to the furnace. This results in improper pressure balances from room-to-room and often leads to uneven room temperatures. Lack of return air causes comfort complaints, higher energy costs, and can even cause moisture problems throughout a home.

While most HVAC contractors install ducts and registers to deliver air to every room in a house, they often neglect to provide adequate return air back to the furnace. In most homes, there is usually only one return air grille in the common hallway that is attempting to serve the entire house. This means that all of the stale cold air in your home has to be pulled through that single grille before it can be heated by the furnace.

Here’s what happens when there isn’t enough return air in a home:

If the bedroom doors are closed, each bedroom becomes pressurized, forcing air into the bedroom walls and ceiling. In the winter, this humid air can contact cold surfaces and lead to condensation and mold.

Also, the main return air grille is starving for air. This then causes the hallway and living room to be depressurized as air is pulled from the attic, cracks in the walls, back into the hallway.

In the winter, the air that is pulled from the attic is cold and this increases the heating load. Conversely, during the summer, the air that is sucked indoors is hot and humid; this increases both the sensible and latent load on the air conditioner and increases power consumption.

There are three possible ways to solve the pressurized-bedroom problem. Each bedroom needs either:

A return air grille ducted back to the furnace;

A through-the-wall transfer grille connecting the bedroom to the hallway;

A crossover duct connecting a ceiling grille in the bedroom with a ceiling grille in the hallway.

The best option is of course the more expensive one: install a return grille/duct into every conditioned room of the house. Through-the-wall transfer grilles are a cheaper solution, but they have a major drawback: noise transmission. People in the hallway can often hear what goes on in the bedroom if a through-the-wall option is used.

A third option is a crossover duct. In this approach, a ceiling grille is placed in each bedroom and then connected to a grille in the hall. While a crossover duct will transmit sound, it will not be as noticeable as a through-the-wall return air.

Before considering a crossover duct, it should be noted that there are some disadvantages to this approach. A great deal of heat loss can occur in an attic space and it would be necessary in northern climates to insulate the duct work and this approach is not recommended in the Northern hemispheres.

Wondering which option best suits your needs? Call a professional and certified contractor who can go over the options with you.
