Gibbon Heating & Air Conditioning has been serving Saskatoon and surrounding areas for over 25 Years,  a "Total Service" company with trained technicians who are able to provide customers with solutions to all their SASKATOON Heating & Air Conditioning requirements!

Here they share a tip on snow plugged exhaust pipes:

When getting alot of snowfall at once, one of the major issues that high efficient furnaces have is that the intake and exhaust pipes get plugged or covered under snow.

Be sure to check your venting first if your high efficient furnace does not come on.

Saskatchewan gas code says the venting shall not be below 18" when side wall venting, due to this fact of getting covered in snow as well if it penetrates the roof,it has to have proper clearance.

The last picture is a concentric vent kit,the exhaust shoots out of the middle and air is drawn from the sides.

This is a common problem for us is Saskatchewan due to the amount of snowfall we have at times.

If your furnace is showing a pressure switch code, more that likely this could be one of the issues

Here they share Why a Hot Water Heater Tune-Up Makes Sense:

Most days you go through life and never give your water heater a second thought. That is until you get up in the morning to have that nice warm wake up shower and you find the water isn't hot. In fact, if you live in a city such as Saskatoon SK, it's down right cold. But what can be done to stop this, or at least cut down the likelihood of this happening to you?

Well thankfully there is an answer to this. A water heater tune up is the answer. I will discuss tank model water heaters in this article and discuss the other styles of water heaters in future articles.

Many manufacturers recommend that a water heater be inspected by a qualified technician at least once per year. Some of the things that will be addressed in a comprehensive water heater tune up are:

  • ensuring the T&P (Temperature and Pressure) valve is operating properly.
  • checking the drain valve to ensure it is not plugged with sediment.
  • checking the anode rod has not used up its useful life.
  • checking that the dip tube is intact and in good condition.
  • and in the case of a natural gas water heater test the gas pressure and any gas safety systems on the water heater.

Even checking these items once is better than the “never” timeframe that happens with most water heaters.

What is an Anode Rod?

The one item that will prolong the life of any hot water tank is the anode rod. You might not know this, but water will want to “attack” the tank of your water heater. It is very similar to the rusting process that occurs on the wheel wells of your car. This is why all tanks will eventually leak. The anode is the "sacrificial lamb" in the hot water heater. Generally speaking residential anode rods are made of magnesium or aluminum. The water will attack these metals first and slow down the process of attacking the tank and subsequently prolonging the life of your water heater. How long will your anode last depends on how bad is the water, and how much do you use your water heater? Here in Saskatchewan they can last from less than a year to as much as ten years. The only way you will know is by pulling it out of your water heater and inspecting it.

 How Often Should You Tune-Up?

The water in Saskatoon is fairly mild, but it makes sense to have a tune-up of your hot water heater once per year. A good idea is to schedule a tune-up of all of your heating systems at once to save some money. The end of summer is a good time to get your hot water heater and furnace checked out. If you have garage heaters and other gas lines (to check for leaks), those could be inspected at the same time.

We have come so far from the days that our parents and Grandparents grew up in. Most of them didn't have running water in a house let alone running hot water. Did you ever ask how did they wash? That one question may bring on some funny stories but it's important to listen to their stories and not take some of the items we rely on every day for granted.

Gibbon Heating and Air Conditioning Trusted Saskatoon plumbing expert shares a tip on choosing a Plumber

Gibbon Heating & Air Conditioning has been serving Saskatoon and surrounding areas for over 25 Years,  a "Total Service" company with trained technicians who are able to provide customers with solutions to all their SASKATOON Heating & Air Conditioning and SASKATOON Plumbing related requirements!

They are Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers

Here they share a tip on choosing a Plumber:

At Gibbon Heating and Air Conditioning we run into a lot of plumbing stories in and around Saskatoon. Many of these unfortunate tales could be averted by simply taking the time to make sure that you are choosing a good plumber. We thought we’d put together a short list to help you out, of course feel free to give us a call any time with your questions at 306.343.9576.

It's inevitable, at some point in time you are going to need a plumber to come to your house. It could be due to a leaky faucet or a toilet that won't flush or it could be a larger project, like installing a new bathroom in your basement. In Saskatoon there is a large number of plumbing and heating companies to choose from, all competing for your business. How does a person go about choosing the right one? Below we'll describe some of the things you can do to ensure that you make the correct choice when looking for a plumbing company to do work for you.

1) Word of Mouth

Speak to your friends and family about their experience with a plumbing contractor they have hired in the past. Was it a positive or negative experience? If there were problems, how were they resolved? Can they provide testimonials?

2) Cost

Hiring a plumber can be expensive. When planning a project that will involve hiring a contractor make sure that you get at least three bids from three different companies and ensure that they can provide positive testimonials from other people that have hired them. The lowest bid is not always the best bid, which leads to point #3.

3) Comparing Apples to Apples

When getting bids, make sure that you and the contractors are clear on the materials they will be providing. For example, you may want to renovate your bathroom and have a plumber come in to replace the fixtures. You get three different bids with three different prices but one is much cheaper than the other two. It may not be because the other two are trying to rip you off. What kind of fixtures and materials is the low bidder providing? There is a vast array of materials on the market and not all are equal. Very often, you get what you pay for.

4) Research

The internet gives today's consumer unprecedented access to a wealth of information. Use it to research brands and materials before you even call a plumber. Inform yourself about why one shower costs more than another. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a glazed trap in a toilet compared to an unglazed trap? The more you know, the better you will be able to determine what is best for you and your situation. A good plumber will always help point you in the right direction when it comes to choosing but having an idea of what you want in the first place is half the battle.

5) Insurance

Does the plumbing contractor carry the proper insurance and liability coverage? Are they bonded and licensed to do the work? Don't be afraid to ask for proof of insurance. Some guys can work cheaply because they don't have these things, which cost money to maintain. Occasionally accidents happen. Would you want someone working in your home who doesn't have the proper coverage?

6) Qualifications

Who are they sending to your door when you call a plumbing contractor? Does he have the necessary experience to do the work? Ask questions when on the telephone or meeting with their salesperson.

7) Guarantee

A reputable company stands behind their work and will clearly state in writing what the warranty period is for a given job. Make sure that you are informed before making a decision. Don't hire Bob's uncle from out of province. If you need him to correct something he didn't do right the first time, he'll be long gone and you'll be stuck with an expensive bill from another plumber to make it right.

8) Jack of all Trades

Beware of the person who says that he/she can do your whole project himself including the plumbing, heating, carpentry, drywall and electrical work. Unless he can show valid Journeyperson qualifications for all of those trades it is probably a case of 'jack of all trades - master of none'. Make sure the person who has the qualifications, and is supposed to do the work, is actually the person who shows up. Don't fall for the old: "I can't make it today so I'm sending my cousin over today to install your tub for you."

As you can see, there are a variety of ways that you can make sure that you decide on the right contractor for the job at hand. It takes some effort on your part, but the reward in the end will be a job well done and a great working relationship.

Here they share 10 Fun Facts About Air Conditioning:

Nobody expects your ears to perk up when overhearing a conversation about air conditioning. As far as most homeowners are concerned, as long as they’re cool when they need to be and warm when they need to be, what else is there to care about? So, this goes out to everyone, politely stifling a yawn when their HVAC technician starts explaining the ins and outs of their air conditioning unit. Air conditioning can be enjoyable!

Here are our Top 10 Fun Facts About Air Conditioning to prove it.

1. Forget comfort - the first air conditioner, designed by Willis Carrier in 1902, was designed to control the humidity in a New York publishing house. Its effects helped ink to dry faster and smudge-free, as well as keeping the paper from expanding and contracting.

2. Do you love catching a summer blockbuster at the movie theatre? You can thank air conditioning. Moviemakers release their big pictures during the summer because people seek out air-conditioned buildings to escape the heat.

3. Air conditioning makes springtime bearable. Allergy sufferers and asthmatics can thank air conditioning for providing clean, filtered air indoors.

4. All those “40 is the new 20” people can thank AC for prolonged life expectancy and the world-changing medical advances. Certain medicines could never have been created without cool, controllable environments, and certain illnesses could never have been cured.

5. You wouldn’t be reading this article if it weren’t for air conditioning. That’s right; you can thank AC for developing and manufacturing computer technology.

6. Vegas wouldn’t be Vegas without AC. In fact, hotter states like Texas, Florida, and Nevada can thank air conditioning for their population booms. Without AC, America’s economic power would rest squarely in the northern states.

7. It’s cool to be green. Manufacturing companies are switching from the old standard refrigerant, R-22, to R-410A. Removing chlorine from air conditioning refrigerants makes them ozone-friendly.

8. High ceilings and open floor plans weren’t just pretty designs for homes. They were made to optimize airflow in a hot building. Now, you can live and work in towering glass buildings (thanks to air conditioning).

9. Before buildings had central air conditioning, industries and even the government took a summer vacation along with school. Do you think things happen too slowly in D.C. now? Imagine working with 2-3 fewer months. Yikes!

10. Kids, thank your lucky stars! Even though summer vacation started as a way to escape the heat, schools kept up the practice even after gaining air conditioning.

Why you should contact a qualified and licensed Saskatoon HVAC company:

The following article was supplied by Brent Badrock - owner of Gibbon Heating and Air

Sometimes we get called out for quotes and come across some horrible installs. The pictures below are from a customer who chose to go with a competitor because they had a cheaper price. Unfortunately the contractor she used butchered her house and did not do any aspect of the job according to Provincial Code.

The contractor destroyed her wall, used an installation manual to support the venting, used flexible appliance hose for the gas lines, did not re-size the chimney, indirectly vented 2 furnaces and a hot water heater in a closet without adequate combustion air, sold her a couple 2 stage furnaces without upgrading the thermostats to take advantage of the energy savings, ran shark bite fittings and flexible hose to the new hot water heater, failed to provide clearance from the furnaces to the wall for servicing, placed the hot water heater in a place with no access, and even used an orange extension cord to supply power to one of the furnaces. It was by far one of the worst installs we have ever seen. And it was an illegal install. After speaking with the Gas Inspector, we learned that a permit had never been pulled by the contractor.
