THE RIEDEL RED WINE GLASS GUIDE

Bateman Jewellers carry a range of housewares - including Riedel Glassware

FOR POPULAR VARIETALS AND GRAPES

With decades of research into the Grape Varietal sensation and support from the world’s wine experts, RIEDEL knows that the enjoyment of aroma, taste, texture and finish of a wine is maximized by using the right "Wine Instrument".

A RIEDEL GLASS TURNS A SIP OF WINE INTO A CELEBRATION

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Considered by many as the king of the Bordeaux region and grown in almost every major wine-producing country, Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most recognizable wine grape varieties. Used for numerous red wines, this grape ripens late and performs best in warm soils. Cabernet Sauvignon covers an array of flavours and scents, from herbaceous when not fully ripe to blackcurrant-flavoured in more ripened bunches. These glasses are perfect for full-bodied, complex red wines high in tannin.

RIEDEL Performance Cabernet/Merlot - The generous size of this glass allows the bouquet to develop fully, and smooths out the rough edges. It emphasizes the fruit, playing down the bitter qualities of the tannin, and allows wines to achieve balance. The optic impact in the RIEDEL Performance series adds both a design feature and an astounding effect on wine's aromatics.

RIEDEL Veritas Cabernet/Merlot - The generous size of this glass allows the bouquet to develop fully, and smooths out the rough edges. It emphasizes the fruit, playing down the bitter qualities of the tannin, and allows wines to achieve balance.

RIEDEL Vinum Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot - Vinum is RIEDEL's basic varietal-specific stemmed series. Designed in 1986 by 10th-generation glassmaker Georg J. Riedel, Vinum was created to ensure every wine lover could afford varietal-specific glassware.

RIEDEL Extreme Cabernet - Its diamond shape works beautifully for big and bold New World wines as the extreme angles offer more space to develop aromas. The generous size of this glass emphasizes fruit, smooths out the tannin's rough edges and bitter qualities, and allows wines to achieve balance.
The Extreme glasses are named after their extreme contours. The bowls mimic polished diamonds and their wide angles allow plenty of room for the wine to breathe. They are specifically designed to enhance and emphasize the pleasant softness and generally fruity notes of the New World wines.

RIEDEL Winewings Cabernet/Merlot -
Its unique flat-bottomed design brings forward primary fruit aromas, allowing the bouquet to develop in detail. It balances the intensity of flavour with the bitter tannins typical of thick-skinned red wine grapes.
RIEDEL Winewings is a brutally functional glass collection, taking wine's aromas and flavours on a flight. Made up of several new shapes, these flat-bottomed glasses are reminiscent of the wing of an aircraft. This means the wine has a greater surface area in the glass, which increases the levels of evaporation.

SL RIEDEL Stemless Wings Cabernet/Merlot -
The glass allows the bouquet to develop fully, and smooths out the rough edges. It emphasizes the fruit, playing down the bitter qualities of the tannin, and allows wines to achieve balance. This glass was redesigned by Georg Riedel in 2020 to ensure its smaller size maintains the delicate and important characteristics of each wine.
This stemless creation is the perfect complement to the original stemmed series. To ensure the tumblers sit comfortably within the drinker's hand, each Grape Varietal shape required a set of new prototypes to determine how much the glass could be reduced while maintaining the delicate and important characteristics of each wine.

RIEDEL O Wine Tumbler Cabernet/Merlot - Designed in 2004, the RIEDEL O Tumbler was the first varietal-specific wine tumbler in history. O is an innovative take on the casual wine glass, based on the benchmark shapes of RIEDEL's Vinum series. Better yet, the O Tumbler fits into every dishwasher so broken stems are a thing of the past.

RIEDEL Sommeliers Bordeaux Grand Cru - This shape was one of the original 'wine friendly' glasses designed by 9th generation Claus J. RIEDEL. The generous size of this glass allows the bouquet to develop fully, and smooths out the rough edges. It emphasizes the fruit, playing down the bitter qualities of the tannin, and allows wines to achieve balance.

Sommeliers was the world’s first wine-friendly glass collection and a design revolution created by Claus J. Riedel (9th generation). The range adheres to the Bauhaus design principle of form follows function, as Claus J. Riedel had discovered that certain wines showed more depth and better balance when enjoyed from certain shapes. Thin-blown and unadorned, Sommeliers was the beginning of RIEDEL's dominance in the global wine glass market.

Riedels master glassmakers individually craft each item so every piece has a unique character. Due to the nature of crafting, small tolerances in the size and weight of each product, tiny bubbles, imperfections, or slight surface variations are an acceptable part of the process.

Trusted Saskatoon Jewellers at Batemans Discuss Recycling Gold Jewellery

Bateman Jewellers are Trusted Saskatoon jewellery experts! Did you know that they are the oldest independent jewellery store in Saskatoon?  Bateman Jewellers maintain that the relationship with their clients is very important to them. In their latest Saskatoon jewellery tip, they discuss recycling gold jewellery.

IS RECYCLED GOLD THE FUTURE OF JEWELLERY?

Gold Recycling

It is estimated that for every 1 million cell phones that are recycled, over 34 kg of gold can be recovered!

Alternatives to mining, such as recycled gold from e-waste, exist today and we are now able to craft beautiful jewellery while limiting our negative impact on the environment.

The future is here!

What does recycled gold mean?

Gold is a highly valued and much loved precious metal that is perfect for recycling. Indeed, gold does not decline in quality when recycled.

Gold can be found and recycled in many surprising places and due to this being largely unknown, much of it, unfortunately, goes to landfill.

Currently, around 90% of recycled gold comes from jewellery and the remaining 10% comes from other sources

What is the impact of gold mining?

“There is no such thing as clean gold, unless it’s recycled or vintage.” - Alan Septoff, Communications Manager for the No Dirty Gold Campaign

1. Human Rights

A recently published article from Human Rights Watch highlights some of the key human rights abuses that can take place in the gold mining industry. For instance, in Venezuela, a high number of reserves of precious metals, including gold, is controlled by armed rebels. Those syndicates “exert strict control over the populations who live and work there, impose abusive working conditions, and viciously treat those accused of theft and other offences.”

2. Waste

One single gold ring can potentially create a staggering 20 tons of mining waste! This waste contains toxic chemicals which can contaminate the nearby water supply and soil. In some cases, local residents are exposed to chemicals such as mercury, which creates serious long-term illnesses. Mercury is a cheap product used to reveal the gold from the rock. Unfortunately, it causes devastating long-term impacts on the people and the planet.

3. Use of Water

Large-scale projects can use an average of 60,000 - 100,000 cubic meters of water every day. It would provide the basic water needs for a population equal to that of a large U.S. city for a year!

4. Acid Mine Drainage

One major issue with Underground Mining is called Fool’s Gold, or Iron Sulphides. It occurs when the rock reacts with oxygen to make what is then called Sulfuric AcidThis acidic process drains from the mine site and can be up to 300 times more concentrated than acid rain! Once this process begins, it is very complicated to stop the spread of contamination in the water.

5. Air Pollution

The electricity produced by burning coal and other fossil fuels in the mining process generates air pollution, smog, and greenhouse gases. As gold mines are typically large-scale operations requiring a sufficient amount of heavy machinery and earth-moving vehicles, airborne pollution is a significant environmental issue.

6. Wildlife

Gold mining destroys local wildlife, habitats and important ecosystems, mostly because of the pollution produced and the vast amount of land each mine required. For instance, the largest mine in the world, the Grasberg Mine, located in Indonesia, operates on 27,400 acres of land and has been a source of ongoing friction and conflict due to its negative environmental impact on the surrounding ecosystems.

In their latest Saskatoon jewellery tip, they discuss the details of jewellery appraisals.

GET YOUR JEWELLERY APPRAISED BY BATEMAN JEWELLERS

What is an appraisal?

An appraisal is a professional opinion of the authenticity, quality, design and approximate value of a piece of property. An appraisal must be typewritten in concise, objective and internationally recognised terminology, accompanied with a photo.

Why Appraise Jewellery?

Most people require appraisals for obtaining insurance but other reasons may include - a division of property upon death or divorce, as proof of ownership when travelling, to use as collateral or for resale.

Where to Find an Appraiser

There is no licensing body which requires jewellery appraisers to attain a minimum level of education/experience before practising. Until legislation is passed to protect the public from those who are unqualified, the burden is on consumers to investigate a company's reputation and question its appraiser's competency. Our Appraiser(s) have a minimum of 25 years of experience and are G.I.A. certified.

How Much Will it Cost?

Fees vary among qualified appraisers. Professional-level fees usually indicate a high degree of education and experience as well as state-of-the-art lab facilities. Since no one professional can be an expert on everything, occasionally your appraiser may consult with others who specialize in a particular field. Be prepared to allow extra time and cost. See our Price list to give you a guide to our pricing. It is always best for us to see the piece first to give you an accurate price quote.

When You're Ready

When you bring your valuables to Bateman Jewellers, we do the appraisals locally. We insure the item(s) for the duration of their stay with us, providing your peace of mind. Although the normal turnaround time is about 1 week, same-day services may be arranged by appointment with notice.

Trusted Saskatoon Jewellers at Batemans Share Secrets of Custom Designed Jewellery

Bateman Jewellers are Trusted Saskatoon jewellery experts! Did you know that they are the oldest independent jewellery store in Saskatoon?  Bateman Jewellers maintain that the relationship with their clients is very important to them. In their latest Saskatoon jewellery tip, they share secrets of custom designed jewellery.

SECRETS OF CUSTOM JEWELLERY

1. You don’t need to be a jewellery designer to get a custom jewellery piece designed. Clients looking for custom jewellery don’t actually need to know a thing about jewellery design. All that’s needed is a sketch (and the sketch doesn’t have to be perfect) or a photo of the piece desired. This is particularly true with CAD jewellery. For example, if you share your sketch or photo with Batemans, we can turn your vision into a CAD model that can then be printed, cast and finished. You choose the stones, metals and size for your final piece.

 2. The customer can be involved every step of the way. With custom design, there is collaboration and communication between the client and the designer throughout the creation process.

3. It’s easier to stay within your budget. Working with a designer gives you the option to choose design elements that are more suitable to your finances; an option not available with mass-produced jewellery.

4. You can have heirloom pieces recreated. One of the best things about customized jewellery and CAD technology is that it makes it possible to recreate a sentimental piece of jewellery – pieces that were lost or damaged over time. CAD makes it possible to bring a cherished piece back to life.

5. Redesign your jewellery. When you order custom, you can also mix new ideas with elements of another piece of jewellery. For example, you might want to use the gemstones from another piece in your customized piece, or you might ask the designer to incorporate some of the design elements of the old piece in the new piece. You can also take existing CAD models and request modifications.

6. Custom 3D-printed jewellery is becoming increasingly popular amongst celebrities and the wealthy. Not long ago, if you’d asked someone about CAD jewellery they would have had no clue as to what you were talking about, but that’s no longer true today; CAD jewellery has gone mainstream. This is largely because 3D-printed jewellery has become so popular among the wealthy, celebrities and Hollywood fashionistas, not to mention famous jewellery designers, all of whom are always looking for an edge and the newest, chicest fashions.

7. Social media is influencing the growing popularity of custom jewellery. The rise of visual social media sites such as Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram has led to a greater awareness of fashion, styles and trends among the general public. New looks and styles are shared with just a click of a button and the images travel across the globe in an instant. Global trends influence each other, fueling a greater desire for uniqueness and originality, which exactly suits custom work. From custom engagement rings to custom body jewellery, people are looking for more diversity and more options. This has naturally led to an increase in the demand for the services provided by CAD professionals.

8 . CAD/CAM has made custom jewellery design not only more accessible, but it has opened up design options not possible before. CAD technology has made it possible to create pieces with greater complexity, originality, and sheer beauty than ever before. And it has simultaneously made the customization process more accessible to everyone.
